We must change the direction of defence investment.
The way Australia invests in defence is currently under review.
We have the opportunity to choose a new direction. WILPF has made a submission to the review panel, urging a comprehensive and integrated approach to this task.
Our submission proposes that there is a broad range of investments needed, including non-military, in order to ensure Australia’s future strategic security.
WILPF is calling for the Australian government to:
- Ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
- Reverse the decision on AUKUS, the military pact between Australia, UK and US
- Invest in non-military choices for Australia’s security – diplomacy, planning for climate change, women, peace and security, peacekeeping and refugee assistance
- Move the money: reallocate military spending to health, education, social security and the care sector
- Grow our strengths in renewable energy, pharmaceuticals and cyber security — not arms exports
- Create jobs and community resilience by having a well-resourced civilian response to natural disasters instead of defence personnel
- Invest in accountability and transparency of Defence priorities and spending
